Ampicillin sodium salt
Ampicillin is a semi-synthetic derivative of penicillin, active as a broad-spectrum antibiotic which is used to select for ampicillin resistance in mutated and transformed cells.
- pKa=2.5 (-COOH), 7.3 (-NH2) at 25 °C
- Loss on drying: <2%
- pH: 8 - 10 (1% aqeuous solution)
Ampicillin is a β-lactam antibiotic with an amino group attached to the penicillin structure
Ampicillin is inactivated by beta-lactamases and acts against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, it has a similar mode of action as chloramphenicol and tetracyclines.
It inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis in E. coli (peptidoglycan cross-linking) by inactivating transpeptidases on the inner surface of the bacterial cell membrane. It is bactericidal only to growing Escherichia coli. It is resisted by the cleavage of β-lactam ring of ampicillin by β-lactamase.
