Each reagent is prepared with 18 megOhm water, filtered using a 0.2 micron filter, and filled into sterile bottles.
Sodium dodecyl sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS/SLS, respectively) is an anionic surfactant commonly used in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for the determination of protein molecular weight. In most proteins, the binding of SDS to the polypeptide chain imparts an even distribution of charge per unit mass, thereby resulting in a fractionation by approximate size during electrophoresis. SDS solutions may also be used in nucleic acid extraction procedures for the disruption of cell walls and dissociation of nucleic acid:protein complexes
